Advancement & Alumni

Welcome to the Bishop Shanahan Advancement & Alumni Website.  Please take a moment and familiarize yourself with the tabs and the information contained in each.  The Advancement Office  works to "Advance the Mission of Bishop Shanahan High School"  through philanthropy, programming and events.  As many know, all tuition goes to the Archdiocese of Philadelphia for teachers' salaries and benefits.  BIshop Shanahan relies on the Shanahan Fund, student fees and fundraisers to fund the Shanahan campus.  Help us secure the monies needed to continue excellence in education here at BSHS.
 Attention all Shanahan alumni
In case you have not heard, the original Bishop Shanahan High School building in West Chester has been replaced with townhouses called "Highpointe at Shanahan."  Though it will not be the same, Shanahan will be remembered in West Chester for many years to come.

Last year was a great year for the Shanahan Fund....thank you for your donations....as of June 30, 2010  cash gifts were $195,010.  We thank all our contributors for making Shanahan a priority during these difficult economic times.    This fund has grown significantly over past years (from $54,500 in '02-'03).  As costs continue to escalate, your support is needed more than ever!  Many thanks to the parents, grandparents, alumni (both BSHS and St. Agnes) who have made these numbers grow!  The support and generosity of all constituencies is greatly appreciated.
Our goal this year is $225,000.   Our Leadership Committee is led by Frank DiFonzo '62, a member of the Shanahan Advisory Board.  If you have any questions regarding the Shanahan Fund our Committee would be glad to talk with you!
Please feel free to contact anyone in the Advancement Office if you have any questions about any  of our Programs.

 EITC  PROGRAM
“ nowhere else can you tell the government how to spend your tax dollars”                          Lawrence E. Morgan, CPA, CFO – Communication Test Design Inc.   -   commented at a recent Education Improvement Tax Credit meeting held at Bishop Shanahan High School.
(Basic information for EITC is listed below….if you need anymore information,
please call the Advancement Office at 610-343-6255)The EITC program allows businesses (both corporations and partnerships) to effectively pay part of their state business taxes through state-certified, non-profit scholarship organizations (i.e. BLOCS). BLOCS, in turn, distributes those dollars directly to financially eligible families as tuition subsidies,  regardless of their race, religion or nationality.Businesses that participate in the K-12 EITC Program can receive up to a 75% tax credit toward taxes owed; however, if that business provides a written, two-year commitment of equal funding, the tax credit is increased to a full 90%.  Businesses, and any of their operating subsidiaries, are allowed to make contributions of up to $300,000 per taxable year.A business must be subject to one of the following seven PA business taxes to participate:

    · Corporate Net Income Tax
    · Capital Stock Franchise Tax
    · Bank and Trust Company Shares Tax
    · Insurance Premiums Tax
    · Mutual Thrift Institutions Tax
    · Title Insurance Companies Shares Tax
    · Personal Income Tax of S Corp Shareholders, or partners in a limited or general partnership

During these difficult economic times, you can make a difference and help a student receive a Catholic Education.
Don't delay!!   Make a difference TODAY!   Make a call and find out how EASY it can be!!!!!

Sponsor a Student
Program Mission:  To enlist financial support for the continuance and long-term betterment of Catholic High School Education within the Archdiocese of Philadelphia
Every year thousands of students are given the gift of a Catholic Education thanks to the generosity of people like you.
How does it work? Bishop Shanahan will identify the greatest tuition assistance needs and allocate the funds accordingly to those students.
Whom does it benefit? Those students who desire the rewards and benefits of a Catholic Education but who need financial assistance.
How do I contribute?  Sponsor A Student provides several levels of gifting, as well as options for payment.
Gifting Levels:  Options include annual donations for a High School tuition sponsorship of $4,720, a partial tuition                                             sponsorship of $1500, a partial tuition sponsorship of $1000, or any amount you specify.
Payment Methods:  Contributions can be made annually, quarterly or monthly.       Donors may pay by check or credit card.  If you have any questions, please contact us directly at                610.343.6255 or send an email to mmorin@shanahan.org.

A New Tax-Saving Opportunity!
If you are 70 ½ or older, recent legislation benefits YOU!  Receive the benefits-before  time runs out.  It took nearly a decade, but Congress has finally enacted legislation as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), which offers charitably minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts from their IRAs and exclude the amount of their gifts from gross income.    To qualify:· The donor must be 70 ½ years of age or older;· The transfers must go directly from the IRA to qualified charities (Bishop Shanahan!);· Gifts cannot exceed $100,000 per taxpayer per year; and Gifts must be outright.**Transfers to donor advised funds, supporting organizations, and charitable remainder trusts and for charitable gift annuities do not qualify.Your gift can be accomplished easily and allow you to maximize the benefit of your IRA dollars.  By directing the mandatory withdrawal to Bishop Shanahan, taxpayers do not have to report the amount as income, and they avoid additional tax on Social Security benefits.  This opportunity is available only until the end of 2007, and can support the Bishop  Shanahan Fund!
