The Guidance Program at Bishop Shanahan High School is concerned with the educational, emotional and social development of all students. A basic assumption of the program is that individuals, from time to time, require help in understanding themselves, the world, and themselves in relation to the world and dealing with the immediate problems with which they are continually faced. Services which are offered include educational, career, personal counseling, support groups, the furnishing of vocational and educational information, parental consultation and referral to other outside specialists when appropriate. In addition to the regular counseling services available to the students, the Guidance Department also provides the services of a Student Assistance Program (S.A.P.). The S.A.P. Team includes members of the faculty, staff and administration. Bishop Shanahan’s S.A.P. Team is an outgrowth of the statewide Student Assistance Program and works in cooperation with Abonnir Counseling Associates of West Chester. The S.A.P. Team seeks to identify which students may be having serious problems and provides the students and their families appropriate sources of assistance. These problems could include: depression, drug and alcohol abuse, stressful situations at home or school, physical, emotional or sexual abuse, social isolation, thoughts of suicide, academic failure, thoughts of danger toward individuals or school community - any concern which is interfering with the students' daily life. |
